Chiang Mai

Northern Thailand's easy base for classes, temples and company

The short verdict

Yes, and it's gentler than Bangkok. The old city is walkable, a hostel bed starts under £10, and cooking classes, meditation retreats and elephant sanctuaries put you in a group without trying. The weak spot is the air: during the crop-burning season the smoke haze is real, so anyone with breathing problems should choose the month carefully.

version v1 · How we calculate it

Chiang Mai is where Thailand gets easier on your own. The old city inside the moat takes an afternoon to walk, and most of what people come here to do happens in groups: a cooking class at your own station, half a day with rescued elephants, a meditation course at a temple. You arrive alone, and by lunchtime the group has done the introductions for you.

It's cheap. Hostelworld dorms start at about €5, and the best-reviewed ones sit between €10 and €15. Numbeo users put a cheap meal at 75 baht, under two pounds. The Michelin Guide gives 18 places a Bib Gourmand, most in the lowest price band, khao soi included.

The air is the problem nobody puts on the postcard. The FCDO flags seasonal smoke haze in Chiang Mai from farmers burning trees and crops, which aggravates asthma and sinus conditions. It doesn't name the months, so check live readings before you book. Nightlife is also much smaller than Bangkok's, and we haven't verified specific bars yet.

Who it's for / who it's not for

  • People who want to learn something on the trip, from Thai cooking to meditation
  • Budget travellers who want a walkable city
  • Remote workers after coworking with long hours
  • First-timers in Asia who find Bangkok too much
  • Anyone with asthma or breathing problems travelling in the smoke season
  • Beach seekers
  • People who want big-city nightlife
  • Travellers who won't use shared songthaews or apps to get around

Frequently asked questions

Is Chiang Mai safe for solo travellers?

Official advice doesn't single out Chiang Mai for risks beyond the national ones, which are spiked drinks, methanol and rental scams. The more concrete local issue is air quality. The FCDO mentions seasonal smoke haze from farmers burning trees and crops.

How much does a day in Chiang Mai cost?

Less than Bangkok. A dorm bed at €5 to €11 list price, 75-baht meals per Numbeo users and a couple of songthaew rides comes to around 800 baht, under £20. A cooking class or half a day with elephants takes you to 2,000 to 3,500 baht.

How do you meet people in Chiang Mai?

Through group activities. Cooking classes with your own station, day programmes at Elephant Nature Park, meditation courses at Wat Suan Dok, and hostels such as Stamps Backpackers that run something every night.

When is the lantern festival in 2026?

Yi Peng and Loy Krathong follow the November full moon. In 2026 hostels hold their lantern nights on 24 and 25 November. Book early: prices rise and discount codes don't apply during festivals.

Is Chiang Mai good for LGBTQ+ travellers?

National law applies, with marriage equality since 2025, and the FCDO calls Thailand generally safe for LGBT+ travellers. We haven't yet verified LGBTQ+ venues or events currently running in the city.

How do I get from the airport into town?

Shuttles A1 and A2 cost 40 baht and serve Nimmanhaemin, the old city moat and the Night Bazaar. Yellow and Red city buses run 06:00 to 23:30. Everything leaves from Gate 12 at the international terminal.

Is Chiang Mai a good base for remote work?

Yes. Punspace runs two coworking spaces in the old city, open 09:00 to 18:00 and around the clock for members. Check air quality before committing to a month in the smoky season.
