Berlin

All-night U-Bahn at weekends, hostel events daily, and long distances between districts

The short verdict

Yes, if you are happy in a big, flat city that runs late. At weekends the U-Bahn runs all night every fifteen minutes, the larger hostels put on something every evening and the queer scene has bars, counselling centres and street festivals with decades behind them. It is harder going if you want instant warmth or a compact old town you can cover on foot.

version v1 · How we calculate it

Berlin does not care that you are on your own, and that is the point. The U-Bahn runs through Friday and Saturday nights, trains every fifteen minutes even at four in the morning. The bigger hostels publish weekly programmes of quizzes, dinners and walks, and nobody at an Imbiss counter wonders why you are eating a currywurst standing up by yourself.

The catch is size. Coming from London you will find the prices kind and the distances familiar: Prenzlauer Berg to Neukölln is half an hour on the U-Bahn, and on weeknights the last trains go around 1am, so where you sleep decides how relaxed your evenings are. There is no single old town to wander. People are direct to the point of curt, which reads as rude only until you get used to it.

For queer travellers the case is strong. Schöneberg has had gay bars around Nollendorfplatz for generations, there are walk-in counselling centres and a daily helpline for victims of homophobic violence, and the CSD in late July draws up to 750,000 people, by visitBerlin's count. Winter is dark and grey; May to September is the easy window.

Who it's for / who it's not for

  • People who want to go out late and still get home by U-Bahn at weekends
  • Gay, lesbian, bi and trans travellers looking for a scene with history and support services
  • Mid-budget travellers who want hostels with a social programme every day
  • Anyone drawn to twentieth-century history and big open spaces like Tempelhofer Feld
  • Travellers who want a small centre they can see entirely on foot
  • Anyone who struggles with short, dark days from November to February
  • People who expect chatty, warm service in cafés and shops
  • Clubbers who will not accept being turned away at the door

Where to stay alone

Mitte (around Rosenthaler Platz)

€€€

ProClose to the museums and sights, with several U-Bahn and tram lines, and walkable from Prenzlauer Berg.

ConPricier than most of the city, and the office and monument blocks go quiet at night.

☾ At nightStreets around Rosenthaler Platz stay busy late. With the all-night weekend U-Bahn, getting back is simple.

  • The Circus Hostel, Weinbergsweg 1a: six-bed female dorm, plus solo rooms with private or shared bathroom

Prenzlauer Berg

€€€

ProLeafy and orderly, next door to Mitte, with cafés where sitting alone with a book is completely normal.

ConEvenings are calm, and a late night usually means taking a train somewhere else.

☾ At nightOne of the easier districts to walk home in. The viaduct along Schönhauser Allee always has people about.

  • EastSeven Berlin Hostel, between Kastanienallee and Senefelderplatz: dorm beds from 25 euros, twins from 73, an event every night at 8pm

Friedrichshain

€€€

ProThe district for nights out. Simon-Dach-Straße is lined with bars and Berghain sits on the Kreuzberg border.

ConLoud at weekends around Warschauer Straße, and the station gets crowded, so keep your phone close.

☾ At nightBusy until dawn at weekends. Crowds bring pickpockets with them.

  • Industriepalast Hostel, Warschauer Straße 43: 24-hour reception, dorms of three to eight beds and single rooms with en suite

Kreuzberg

€€€

ProThe best area for eating alone, from Markthalle Neun to the stands on Mehringdamm, with mixed queer bars around Kottbusser Tor.

ConJunctions like Kottbusser Tor are chaotic, and not the nicest place to wait for a night bus.

☾ At nightLots of people around. Stick to main roads and U-Bahn stations rather than cutting through parks.

  • Grand Hostel Classic, Tempelhofer Ufer 14: private rooms and dorms on the canal

Things to do alone

Reichstag dome

Free, but you must register online in advance with your name and date of birth. Decided on the day? The service point on Platz der Republik hands out spare slots up to two hours ahead if you bring photo ID.

Free

Berlin Wall Memorial, Bernauer Straße

The clearest place to understand the border, which ran for 155 kilometres around West Berlin. A digital guide on your phone makes it easy to do alone at your own pace.

Tempelhofer Feld

More than 300 hectares of former airfield, open to everyone since 2010. Cycle the runways, skate, or lie on the grass with a book under a very wide sky.

Vabali Spa

Thirteen saunas and steam rooms, with pools and a sauna garden. From October to March it opens daily from 8am to midnight.

October-March 8am-midnight, April-September 9am-midnight

A night in a club

Berghain is the city's best-known club and has its toughest door. Photography inside is strictly banned and the queue is nearly always long. If you are turned away, Friedrichshain has plenty more within a few minutes.

Eating alone

Markthalle Neun

Covered market with stalls and shared tables. Street Food Thursday is the night you are most likely to end up chatting to the person next to you. Closed on Sundays.

Curry 36, Mehringdamm

Started in 1980 in a doorway barely more than a metre wide. You eat standing at the counter, which suits a table for one perfectly.

Mehringdamm 36, Kreuzberg

Konnopke's Imbiss

Under the U2 viaduct since 1930, and the first stand to sell currywurst in East Berlin. Paper plate, five minutes, no awkwardness.

Schönhauser Allee, Prenzlauer Berg

At night

Going out

Friedrichshain around Simon-Dach-Straße and Warschauer Straße for bars, Kreuzberg for mixed nights, Schöneberg around Nollendorfplatz for the long-established gay scene. Big clubs open late and the queue is part of the night.

Getting back

Friday, Saturday and nights before public holidays: U-Bahn all night every 15 minutes, S-Bahn every 30. On weeknights the U-Bahn stops around 1am and the S-Bahn between 1am and 1.30am; then night buses N1 to N9 shadow the U-Bahn lines and Metrotrams run every 30 minutes.

Avoid

Do not leave bags unattended at big stations or in crowds, which the FCDO and Italy's foreign ministry both flag for theft. Avoid cutting through large parks late: in May 2026 MANEO reported a homophobic attack at night in Volkspark Friedrichshain.

Dating

TinderBumbleHingeGrindrHER

Berliners tend to be direct on dates as in everything else. For a first meeting a bar or neighbourhood café works better than dinner, because it is shorter and easier to end.

Meet in a public place and tell someone where you are. There is no legal risk attached to your orientation. In clubs and at parties, do not leave your drink unattended.

Getting around

From the airport, also at night

BER is in fare zone C, so buy an ABC ticket at 5 euros. The FEX reaches Hauptbahnhof in about 23 minutes, every 15 minutes from 4am to 1am. Overnight, buses N60 to Alexanderplatz and N7 run every 30 minutes from stops A4 and A6-7 at Terminal 1.

In town

One ticket covers U-Bahn, S-Bahn, trams and buses. A single AB costs 4 euros and lasts two hours, a short trip 2.80, a four-trip strip 12.40. If you are staying a week and taking day trips, the Deutschlandticket at 63 euros a month can pay off, but it is a rolling subscription you have to cancel.

Frequently asked questions

Is Berlin safe for solo travellers at night?

The UK Foreign Office puts crime levels at roughly those of the UK and tells you to watch for pickpockets at airports, stations and in crowds. Italy's foreign ministry notes a rise in pickpocketing in parts of Berlin. At weekends the U-Bahn runs all night, so you rarely have a long walk home.

How much does a day in Berlin cost on your own?

A dorm bed from 25 euros, two cheap meals and a day ticket come to around 70 euros, roughly 59 pounds or 78 dollars at October 2026 rates. Numbeo users put a meal in an inexpensive restaurant at about 15 euros.

What is the easiest way to meet people in Berlin?

Pick a hostel with a fixed programme. The Circus runs a pub quiz on Tuesdays at 7pm and something every day, EastSeven has an event every night at 8pm and a shared dinner on Sundays. The SANDEMANs free tour leaves from the Brandenburg Gate and lasts two hours.

Is Berlin good for gay and queer travellers?

Yes. Germany ranks seventh of 49 in ILGA-Europe's Rainbow Map 2026 and fourth in the Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2026. Schöneberg around Nollendorfplatz is the historic gay area, Kreuzberg the more mixed one. The 2026 CSD parade took place on 25 July.

How do I get from BER airport into Berlin late at night?

The FEX reaches Hauptbahnhof in about 23 minutes and runs every 15 minutes from 4am to 1am. After that, night buses N60 to Alexanderplatz and N7 run every 30 minutes. You need an ABC ticket at 5 euros, because the airport sits in zone C.

Do I need anything special to enter Germany from the UK or US?

No visa for short stays, but your passport must meet Schengen rules, and the new Entry/Exit System may take your fingerprints and photo at the border. Read the current FCDO page before you fly rather than relying on a summary.

Which area should I stay in on a first visit?

Mitte or Prenzlauer Berg if you want to get home in a few stops, Friedrichshain if you plan to be out until late, Kreuzberg if food matters more than quiet. The neighbourhood section lists hostels we checked, including one with a female-only dorm.
