Montréal

Simple metro, all-night airport bus, a real queer Village and serious winters

The short verdict

Yes, especially between May and October, and if you want an easy first city in North America. Night buses fill the gap after the metro, central hostels have women-only rooms and the queer Village is two stops from downtown. The catch is a long, hard winter and a bill that creeps up because many prices are shown before tax.

version v1 · How we calculate it

From London or Dublin, Montréal is the easiest way into North America on your own. It is not the prettiest city on the continent, but it is legible: four metro lines, night buses from 1am to 5am, an airport bus that never stops and hostels with women-only rooms. You can switch between French and English and people switch with you, which takes the edge off a first solo trip.

The winter is the honest drawback. The UK Foreign Office warns of frequent storms, freezing rain and blizzards from November to April, and in those months life moves indoors. Go in February for Igloofest or the museums, not for long walks. The second drawback is the bill: BIXI, Igloofest and the hostels all quote prices before tax, so what you pay is always more than the number you read.

On safety, the Italian foreign ministry asks for normal precautions and notes that theft and violent incidents, including with firearms, are rising in Canada's big cities. Neither the Italian nor the British advice names a Montréal neighbourhood to avoid. Keep your bag zipped on the metro and plan your ride home, and that covers most of it.

For New Yorkers the comparison is simpler. The metro is smaller and calmer than the subway, a 24-hour pass costs CAD 11.25, around 8 US dollars, and the queer Village is a ten-minute ride from downtown.

Who it's for / who it's not for

  • First-time solo travellers in North America who want transport that works late
  • Women travelling alone who want women-only rooms in a central hostel
  • LGBTQ+ travellers looking for a proper queer neighbourhood reachable by metro
  • Anyone who likes outdoor festivals between May and October
  • People who hate the cold and can only travel from December to March
  • Very tight budgets that do not want to factor in sales tax
  • Anyone after wilderness on the doorstep without hiring a car

At night

Going out

The Village along rue Sainte-Catherine Est for queer bars and cabaret, the Latin Quarter for student bars, the Plateau for sitting down with a drink. Many places, including the M Bar and Unity, close at 3am.

Getting back

From 1am to 5am the 300-series night buses cover most of the island, every 4 to 45 minutes depending on the area. From 7:30pm to 5:30am anyone travelling alone can ask to be dropped between stops, telling the driver one stop ahead. The 747 airport bus runs all night.

Avoid

Downtown office streets after midnight, which are empty rather than dangerous, and unlit parks. In winter, the real hazard on the walk home is ice.

Frequently asked questions

Is Montréal safe at night for a woman on her own?

Neither the UK Foreign Office nor the Italian foreign ministry flags any Montréal neighbourhood to avoid, though the Italian advice notes that theft and violent incidents are rising in Canada's big cities. On STM buses from 7:30pm to 5:30am you can ask the driver to let you off between two stops, closer to where you are staying.

How much does a day in Montréal cost for one person?

A dorm bed, two cheap meals and a 24-hour transit pass come to about CAD 95-100, roughly 51-53 pounds or 68-71 US dollars at late-October 2026 rates. Add a mid-range dinner and a museum and you are nearer CAD 150.

How do I meet people in Montréal when travelling solo?

Start with the hostels. Saintlo runs free pub crawls and bike tours, and the bar at M Montreal has something on every night until 3am, from karaoke to Latin dance lessons. In summer there is Piknic Électronik at Parc Jean-Drapeau; in January and February, Igloofest in the Old Port.

Is Montréal good for LGBTQ+ travellers?

Yes. Same-sex marriage has been legal across Canada since 2005, and federal law has protected gender identity and expression since 2017. The scene is concentrated in the Village on rue Sainte-Catherine Est, and Fierté Montréal drew more than a million participants in 2026.

When is the best time to go?

May to October, when the city lives outdoors. The FCDO notes frequent winter storms from November to April, and summer wildfire smoke can affect air quality. If you go in winter, plan around Igloofest, 14 January to 6 February 2027.

How do I get from the airport to downtown late at night?

The 747 bus runs between Montréal-Trudeau and downtown 24 hours a day. The fare is CAD 11.25 and works as a 24-hour pass on buses and the metro in zone A. Night routes 356 and 378 also serve the airport.

Where should a solo woman stay?

Downtown or the Latin Quarter. Saintlo on rue Mackay lets you choose between mixed and women-only rooms, and M Montreal, five minutes from Berri-UQAM metro, lists female dorms among its rooms.
