Madrid

Free museum hours, language exchanges and night buses until morning

The short verdict

Yes, and it may be the best European capital for going out alone at night. The metro runs until 1.30am and 27 night bus lines take over from there, the big museums have free final hours and language exchanges happen several evenings a week. It is wrong for anyone who wants dinner at seven or a rock-bottom bed in the centre.

version v1 · How we calculate it

Madrid is the city to pick if evenings are the part of solo travel you dread. Not because of the bars, but because of the transport. The metro runs until 1.30am, and from Plaza de Cibeles 27 night bus lines, the Búhos, run every 15 to 20 minutes on Saturdays. You can stay out without doing taxi maths.

The second reason is that meeting people here has a timetable. MadridBabel meets two evenings a week on Plaza de San Martín and has more than 17,000 members on Meetup; La Fontana de Oro runs a language exchange on Thursday nights. Central hostels from TOC to Bastardo run event calendars, and in October 2026 Bastardo had rooftop yoga every Tuesday.

The weak point is the centre itself, which is loud and not cheap. Sol and Gran Vía are convenient and crowded at all hours, and dorm beds start at 17 to 20 euros on Hostelworld. The museum trick is to go late: the Prado is free Monday to Saturday from 6pm to 8pm. The tourist board's own rule of thumb is that locals rarely sit down to dinner after 11pm, so a 9pm table is not late.

Who it's for / who it's not for

  • Anyone who wants to go out alone and get home on public transport at any hour
  • People who want to practise Spanish at a language exchange
  • Museum lovers ready to use the free hours at the Prado and Reina Sofía
  • LGBTQ+ travellers looking for a large, visible scene
  • People who like an early dinner and bed by ten
  • Anyone after a beach, or a city you can see in half a day
  • Light sleepers hoping for a quiet centre on Friday and Saturday nights
  • Anyone who wilts in August heat and half-empty streets

For Spain, the UK Foreign Office describes thieves who work in teams with distractions, fake police asking to see your wallet, and drink spiking with GHB. How do I meet people in Madrid?

Language exchanges are the easiest route. MadridBabel on Meetup, with more than 17,000 members, meets on Wednesdays and Sundays at 7pm at Mana bar on Plaza de San Martín. La Fontana de Oro on Calle Victoria hosts one on Thursdays from 7.30pm. Bastardo Hostel's events and the free walking tours fill the gaps.

Is Madrid good for LGBTQ+ travellers?

Yes. Spain is first of 49 countries on ILGA-Europe's 2026 Rainbow Map, with 89%. Chueca is the centre of the scene, with bars such as LL Bar and Fulanita de Tal, which is aimed at LBT+ women. MADO 2026 ran from 1 to 5 July with the march on the 4th.

Where should I stay in Madrid as a solo woman?

How do I get in from Barajas late at night?

The Exprés Aeropuerto bus runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, for 5.10 euros, from Atocha by day and Cibeles at night. Metro line 8 links the airport to Nuevos Ministerios until the network closes, with a 3 euro airport supplement.
