Jardí del Túria, the park laid out in the old riverbed of Valencia

Valencia

Beach, the Turia park and hostel dinners, with no tourist tax on top

The short verdict

Yes, especially if you want a beach city where you do not feel like a tourist on parade. There are four kilometres of city beaches, nine kilometres of park in the old Turia riverbed and central hostels with women-only dorms and group dinners. With no tourist tax, it costs less than Barcelona. August heat is heavy, and prices jump during Las Fallas.

version v1 · How we calculate it

Valencia is the Spanish city to pick if you want the sea without Barcelona's effort. The numbers are simple: four kilometres of city beaches, more than nine kilometres of park in the old bed of the River Turia, and over 200 kilometres of cycle lanes. You can spend a whole day alone on a bike, from the old town to the sea, without touching public transport.

Meeting people runs on a timetable. In Ciutat Vella three hostels from the same group, Hôme, Red Nest and Purple Nest, keep a calendar of nights: family dinners, sangria parties, agua de Valencia, daily walking tours. On Tuesday evenings there is a language exchange at Palau Alameda. And the bill is lighter, because Valencia has no tourist tax: the regional law that created one was repealed in 2023 before it was ever applied.

The downsides. Summer heat is extreme and the Foreign Office tells visitors to check AEMET warnings for flash floods too. During Las Fallas in March the city is loud day and night and beds cost far more. And the metro shuts early on weeknights, at 11.30pm, which will feel familiar if you live by the last train home.

Who it's for / who it's not for

  • Anyone who wants beach and city on the same day, by bike
  • Women who want a women-only dorm in a central hostel with group nights
  • Travellers who want to spend less than in Barcelona, with no tourist tax
  • Runners looking for marked routes in the Turia park
  • People who struggle with heat and are travelling in August
  • Anyone looking for quiet during Las Fallas in March
  • People who want the metro after midnight on a weeknight
  • Anyone after a nightlife scene on the scale of Madrid

Frequently asked questions

Is Valencia safe for a woman travelling alone?

For Spain, the UK Foreign Office warns about pickpockets working in teams and drink spiking, and in summer about extreme heat and flash flooding, telling travellers to follow warnings from the AEMET weather agency. Late at night, once the metro stops, there are EMT night buses and taxis.

How much does a day in Valencia cost on your own?

A dorm bed at about 21 euros, two cheap meals at 17 each according to Numbeo users and a few 1.50 euro metro rides come to about 60 euros. Valencia does not charge a tourist tax. A private room pushes it to around 95.

How do I meet people in Valencia?

Valencia Language Exchange, a Meetup group with more than 9,000 members, meets every Tuesday from 8.30pm at Palau Alameda. Hôme Youth Hostel runs family dinners, sangria parties and agua de Valencia nights. Spain Free Tours leaves Plaza de la Virgen every day.

Is Valencia good for LGBTQ+ travellers?

Yes. Spain tops ILGA-Europe's 2026 Rainbow Map. Valencia has Lambda, an LGTBIAQ+ association since 1986 that organises Pride in June; in 2026 the march set off on 20 June from Pont de l'Exposició. There are bars in Russafa and the old town.

Where should I stay in Valencia as a solo woman?

In Ciutat Vella. Hôme Youth Hostel opposite La Lonja has women-only dorms of three and four beds, Red Nest one of six, and Purple Nest on Plaza de Tetuán eight-bed women-only dorms, one with its own bathroom.

How do I get from the airport into Valencia?

Metro lines 3 and 5 link the airport, 8 kilometres out, with the centre in about 20 minutes, every 15 to 20 minutes. The fare is 4.80 euros plus the card. The metro stops at 11.30pm on weekdays and 12.30am at weekends; after that it is a taxi from the rank at Terminal 1.

When is the best time to go?

Las Fallas, 15 to 19 March, is the busiest and priciest week. The 6 December 2026 marathon fills hotels. For beach weather without the extreme heat the Foreign Office warns about in summer, aim for spring after Las Fallas or September.
