Taipei

Night markets, a spotless metro and Asia's biggest Pride

The short verdict

Yes, and it's one of the easiest Asian capitals to handle alone. The UK Foreign Office calls crime in Taiwan extremely low, night markets are built for grazing stall to stall, and hostel beds start at NT$580 (about £13). It works especially well for LGBTQ+ travellers. The catch is the weather: humid heat, and typhoons from May to November.

version v1 · How we calculate it

Taipei is the Asian capital we'd send you to if you want Asia without the chaos. The metro has no-food, no-drink zones, licensed taxis are yellow with a small red light, and convenience stores stay open around the clock. The UK Foreign Office calls crime in Taiwan extremely low. In the evening the city moves to its night markets, where you eat standing up from one stall to the next and nobody counts the people at your table.

It's also Asia's queer capital, and not as a slogan. Taiwan was the first country in the region to open marriage to same-sex couples, under a law in force since 24 May 2019, and its late-October Pride is, in the FCDO's words, the largest regular LGBT+ event in Asia: around 150,000 people in 2025. In 2026 the parade falls on Saturday 31 October, the day after the 8th Trans March. On the Spartacus index Taiwan is 28th, four places above the UK.

The downsides are practical. From April to October it's hot and humid, and typhoon season runs from May to November; in late October 2026 a typhoon even shut down an LGBTQ+ helpline for two days. The island is seismically active. And restaurants serve dinner between 5pm and 10pm, so if you arrive late you'll often find kitchens closed and end up at a night market or a 24-hour convenience store.

Money is easy to work out from home: at the Bank of Taiwan's late-October rate a pound buys about NT$43 and a dollar about NT$32.5, so a NT$150 night-market meal is around £3.50 or $4.60.

Who it's for / who it's not for

  • First-timers in Asia who want an orderly, easy city
  • LGBTQ+ travellers who want a capital where the law is on their side
  • Anyone happy to eat standing at a stall at any hour
  • Mid-range budgets that want to spend less than in Japan
  • Anyone who can't cope with humid heat and rain
  • Anyone after big club nights every night
  • Anyone unwilling to risk a typhoon between May and November

Frequently asked questions

Is Taipei safe for a woman alone at night?

The UK Foreign Office says crime rates in Taiwan are extremely low, and Italy's foreign ministry mentions only sporadic bag snatching and theft from foreigners. Normal precautions still apply, especially in tourist bars. There's a dedicated domestic abuse and sexual assault line: 113.

When is Taiwan Pride in 2026?

Saturday 31 October 2026, according to the Taiwan Tongzhi Hotline calendar. The day before, 30 October, is the 8th Taiwan Trans March. The 2025 parade drew around 150,000 people.

How much does a day in Taipei cost alone?

About NT$1,200 (roughly £28 or $37) on a dorm bed and simple meals, about NT$2,600 (£60 or $80) with a private room and one sit-down dinner. Numbeo users put a cheap meal at NT$150 and a metro ride at NT$20.

How do you meet people in Taipei?

Free walking tours run daily (Tour Me Away and Like It Formosa), hostel lounges help, and LGBTQ+ travellers can join groups run by the Taiwan Tongzhi Hotline. On a long layover there's even a free half-day tour from the airport.

Is Taipei a good destination for LGBTQ+ travellers?

Yes. Taiwan was the first country in Asia to open marriage to same-sex couples, under a law in force since 24 May 2019, and it ranks 28th in the 2026 Spartacus Gay Travel Index, ahead of the UK (32nd). Discrimination on the grounds of gender and gender identity is illegal.

When should I go?

October to March brings moderate temperatures; April to October is hot, humid and often wet in the north. Typhoons arrive between May and November: in late October 2026 one shut the Taiwan Tongzhi Hotline's phone service for two days.

Where should I stay?

Around Main Station in Datong, with the airport line on your doorstep and well-reviewed hostels. Zhongshan if you want bars and LGBTQ+ venues within walking distance. Songshan and Xinyi if you'd rather be near Raohe night market and Taipei 101.
