Bologna
A walkable centre, dinner at the market and a hostel with something on nightly.
The short verdict
Yes, for a solo weekend built around food: the centre is walkable, the Mercato delle Erbe food hall serves dinner until midnight and one hostel runs a free event every night. The catches are price, with dorms from 22 euros, and how safe people feel after dark: Numbeo users rate walking alone at night low.

version v1 · How we calculate it
Bologna is the Italian city where eating alone takes the least effort. The food hall at the Mercato delle Erbe on Via Ugo Bassi serves dinner until midnight Monday to Saturday, and the centre is compact enough to walk back from almost anywhere. Stay at Ostello Bello on Via del Porto and there is a free event for guests every evening, no sign-up needed.
Two problems are worth knowing before you book. The first is price. Hostelworld dorms start at 22 euros and some go above 40, and Numbeo users put a cheap meal at 20 euros, about £17. The second is how safe people feel at night. Numbeo users score walking alone after dark at 39 out of 100, a low figure. It is crowdsourced perception rather than police data, but it supports a simple habit: at night, stick to busy streets and keep your phone out of sight.
From the airport the Marconi Express monorail gets you to the station in about seven minutes, which makes even a short break workable.

Getting back
The centre is walkable, but given the Numbeo night score choose busy streets. On TPER buses you can tap a contactless card on the validator at the standard fare. To and from the airport after midnight there is bus Q.
Avoid
Unlicensed taxis and drinks from strangers. The Foreign Office also notes that bar measures in Italy are often stronger than in the UK.
Safety
General
Numbeo users (206 contributions) give Bologna a safety index of 51 out of 100. For Italy the Foreign Office flags pickpocketing and bag-snatching in city centres and tourist sites, on transport, at airports and in bars, often with distraction techniques. Protests can start with little warning.
Women
Bologna's perception score is low, 39 out of 100 for walking alone at night. The Foreign Office warns about drink spiking, with victims robbed and sometimes assaulted. Italy's free 24-hour violence and stalking line is 1522, also available by chat.
LGBTQ+
The Cassero on Via Don Minzoni is the city's reference point, with a dedicated line for anyone facing discrimination or violence (+39 388 0925933) and counselling and legal desks.
Trans people
We have no Bologna-specific data. Nationally the Rainbow Map 2026 notes a government bill (August 2025) that would tighten controls on gender-affirming care for under-18s. This section needs review by a trans person before publication.
At night
The centre is small and walkable, but stick to busy streets. After midnight bus Q serves the airport.
Common scams
Distraction thefts, unlicensed street traders (buying from them is illegal and can mean a fine), unlicensed taxis.
