An independent guide for people who travel alone

Naples

Pizza at the counter, hostel rooftops and an old town you can walk.

The short verdict

It depends how much perceived risk bothers you. Naples is cheap, eating alone standing at a counter is normal and central hostels put on something every night. But Numbeo users score walking alone at night at 27.5 out of 100, the lowest of any city in this guide. It works if you stay central and head back early or in company.

version v1 · How we calculate it

Naples is the Italian city where eating alone costs least and feels least awkward. Da Michele, on Via Cesare Sersale since 1870, has four pizzas on the menu and a long wait it calls part of the ritual. Sorbillo on Via dei Tribunali also sells Zia Esterina's fried pizza to eat on the street. A dorm bed starts at 14 euros, about £12.

Then there is the reputation, which is worth separating from the evidence. The figure most quoted online comes from Numbeo users: 27.5 out of 100 for walking alone at night and 64.2 for worry about mugging. It is crowdsourced perception, not police data, but it should not be brushed aside. The UK Foreign Office, for Italy as a whole, names pickpocketing and bag-snatching in centres and on transport as the main risk, often using distraction.

In practice: stay central, keep your phone in your pocket, split your cash, and at night head back with company or along busy streets. Do that and Naples is an easy city to be alone among people, helped by hostels that run something every evening.

The Phlegraean Fields near the city have national emergency planning and regular tremors, which the Foreign Office mentions; worth knowing if you stay in that area.

Who it's for / who it's not for

  • Anyone who wants to eat well cheaply, alone at the counter if need be
  • Travellers after a hostel with nightly events and women-only dorms
  • People wanting a base for a Pompeii day trip
  • Fans of loud, crowded cities
  • Anyone who often walks home alone late and is easily unsettled
  • People looking for quiet and order
  • Those who don't want to think about where their phone and wallet are

The historic centre and Toledo are the handiest bases for going out. For LGBTQ+ travellers the reference point is Arcigay's FreeID. At Ostello Bello the evening starts at the bar and on the rooftop.

Getting back

We could not find official, current last-train times for the metro and funiculars, so check the app or at the station before you go out. If you are back late, take a licensed taxi from an official rank, an app or by phone.

Avoid

Carrying all your cash in one place, leaving your phone on an outdoor table, accepting drinks from strangers. The Foreign Office adds distraction tricks such as someone asking for directions or help.
