An independent guide for people who travel alone
The main waterside walk of the Darsena near Porta Genova in Milan

Milan

Pricey but well organised, with easy ways to meet people every night

The short verdict

It depends on your budget. Milan works well alone: hostels with something on every night, weekly language exchanges and group aperitivos, a metro running until about half past midnight and an openly queer-friendly neighbourhood. But dorm beds start above €20, a cheap dinner is around €20, and the big sights need booking weeks ahead.

version v1 · How we calculate it

Nobody goes to Milan for a checklist of monuments, and travelling alone you notice that fast. What it does well is routine: it's built for people who work long hours, so the evening already has ways to meet people baked in. Language exchanges on Thursdays, group aperitivo on Fridays, a free run on Saturday mornings, hostels with a different event every night of the week. You don't have to invent anything.

The catch is the bill. A dorm bed costs €20 to €26 on Hostelworld list prices, plus €3 a night in tourist tax. Numbeo users put a cheap meal at €20 and a half-litre of beer at €6.25. And the Last Supper, the reason many people come, costs €15 but is almost always sold out: visits last 15 minutes, for 40 people at a time.

Transport, on the other hand, just works. Contactless at every gate, metro until about half past midnight, night buses after that. One thing catches visitors out: Milan's white taxis don't stop when hailed. Call 02.7777 or use the city's app.

Who it's for / who it's not for

  • People who want company in the evening without organising it
  • Remote workers who value reliable public transport
  • LGBTQ+ travellers looking for an openly queer-friendly district
  • Short-stay visitors in town for design, fashion or a gig
  • Anyone on under €50 a day
  • People wanting a walkable art city for a weekend
  • Spontaneous types hoping to see the Last Supper without booking
  • Bargain hunters travelling during fashion weeks or the Salone

Where to stay alone

Navigli and Porta Ticinese

€€€

ProMilan's aperitivo and nightlife district since the 1980s. The Darsena is the sunset spot, and the bars are shoulder to shoulder.

ConPacked and loud on weekend nights, and a long way from Centrale station.

☾ At nightBusy until late, like any bar district. Watch for pickpockets.

  • Combo Milano, Ripa di Porta Ticinese 83, mixed and women's dorms from €20 (Hostelworld list price)

Porta Venezia

€€€

ProAccording to YesMilano, the city's most openly queer-friendly area, with LGBTQIA+ bars on Via Lecco and nearby streets, plus Bar Basso for aperitivo. On metro line M1.

ConFew hostels nearby, and it's packed during Pride Square week in June.

☾ At nightBusy streets around the bars in the evening.

Centrale, Garibaldi and Isola

€€€

ProHandy for trains and airports. Isola has Via Borsieri for an evening drink, and the Mercato Centrale inside Centrale station is open until 23:00.

ConBland around the station, and the FCDO flags more pickpocketing at main stations.

☾ At nightKeep an eye on bags at the stations. Isola is calmer.

  • Ostello Bello Grande, Via Lepetit 33, women-only rooms and free weekly events
  • MEININGER Milano Garibaldi, multi-bed rooms, dorms from €24 (Hostelworld list price)

Porta Romana and Fondazione Prada

€€€

ProWell-connected residential area with two hostels that lean into evening events.

ConFewer bars on the doorstep than the Navigli, and you'll need the metro for the Duomo.

☾ At nightQuiet and residential.

  • YellowSquare Milan, Via Lattuada 14, dorms from €19.53 (Hostelworld list price)
  • Madama Hostel & Bistrot, Via Benaco 1, women's dorms up to 8 beds for guests aged 18 to 45

Italy ranks 36th of 49 countries on ILGA-Europe's Rainbow Map 2026, with a score of 24%. That reflects gaps in national law rather than street life in Milan, where the scene is most visible and centred on Porta Venezia. We haven't yet verified which Via Lecco venues are open today, so none are named.

Frequently asked questions

Is Milan safe at night on your own?

The FCDO's main warning for Italian cities is pickpocketing and bag-snatching in centres, at tourist sights and at main stations, often using distraction. To get home, the metro runs until roughly 00:20 to 00:30, then night buses and taxis. Milan's taxis must be booked; they don't stop on the street.

Is Milan OK for women travelling alone?

We have no Milan-specific data. Italy's 1522 helpline for violence and stalking is free and open 24 hours, and the Mangiagalli clinic at the Policlinico supports survivors of sexual and domestic violence. The 112 Where ARE U app lets you call for help silently.

How much does a day in Milan cost?

About €60, roughly £50, on a dorm bed, the €3 tourist tax, a €20 cheap meal per Numbeo users and a €7.60 day ticket. A private room and one paid sight a day takes you past €110.

How do you meet people in Milan?

The central hostels run free events every night. Thursday has the BlaBla language exchange, Friday an international aperitivo on Meetup, Saturday morning a free parkrun in Parco Nord.

What's Milan like for LGBTQ+ travellers?

Locally, Porta Venezia is the city's openly queer-friendly district. Nationally, Italy ranks 36th of 49 on ILGA-Europe's Rainbow Map 2026 with 24%, against 43.9% for the UK. Pride is in late June.

How do I get in from Malpensa late at night?

The Malpensa Express to Cadorna runs from 04:27 to 01:00, takes 37 minutes and costs €15. The ATM city ticket isn't valid on it.

When should I go?

For buzz, design week: the Salone del Mobile runs 13 to 18 April 2027. For lower prices, avoid fashion weeks and Salone week, when beds fill up.
