Palermo

Street food, sociable hostels and southern prices, with your wits about you

The short verdict

Yes, if you like eating on the street and can live with some chaos. Palermo is far cheaper than Milan: a cheap meal is about €15, a bus ticket €1.40, and two central hostels run something every night and have women-only dorms. The weak spots are pickpocketing in crowded areas and getting around after dark.

version v1 · How we calculate it

Palermo is the Italian city where eating alone is least awkward, because so much of it happens standing up. You order arancine at a counter and eat them on the pavement, and nobody wonders who you're waiting for. Numbeo users put a meal at an inexpensive restaurant at €15, about £12.50, and a cappuccino at €2.05.

Where you sleep matters. Both hostels we verified are in the newer part of town between Politeama, Via Libertà and the port, and both run something every evening, from social dinners to karaoke. Both have women-only dorms. The old centre, around the cathedral, Ballarò and the Kalsa, is walkable from there, and it's where your days will go.

Two drawbacks are worth planning for, and neither is a reason to stay away. The FCDO warns about pickpocketing and bag-snatching in Italian city centres, and that matters in Palermo's crowded markets. Then there's transport. A bus ticket is only €1.40, but the airport means a 50-minute bus or a €39 to €50 fixed-fare taxi, and we couldn't verify evening bus and tram times.

Who it's for / who it's not for

  • Street food lovers on a budget
  • People who want a hostel with a women's dorm and organised evenings
  • Travellers who want to cover many museums and churches on a single 7-day pass
  • Budget travellers happy with €1.40 buses
  • Anyone who relies on fast public transport at night
  • People who find traffic and blocked pavements stressful
  • Travellers looking for a calm, orderly city
  • Anyone after an LGBTQ+ bar scene open every night

Going out

In 2026 Pride week used spaces across the city, from Giardino di Handala in Ballarò to the Punk Funk record shop bar and Orbita, with the party at Fabric on Via Ugo La Malfa. We haven't verified regular opening nights for bars and clubs, so there's no list here.

Getting back

Cost for one

  • Low €55per day
  • Mid €100per day
  • High €180per day

Per person per day. The hostels don't publish dorm prices on their own sites, so the bed is an estimate to check when you book. Low: a dorm bed, one €15 meal per Numbeo users plus street food, a €3.50 AMAT day pass. Mid: a private room, one ticket such as the Royal Palace (€14.50) or Teatro Massimo (€14), a €30 group tour. High: a hotel and a €39 to €50 fixed-fare airport taxi. Tourist tax isn't included because the sources we found conflict. At ECB rates on 27 October 2026, €55 is about £46.

Frequently asked questions

Is Palermo safe for solo travellers?

The FCDO flags higher levels of pickpocketing and bag-snatching in Italian city centres and at tourist sights, often with distraction techniques, plus spiked drinks. We have no neighbourhood-level data. In crowded markets, carry your bag in front and keep your phone away from the road.

Is Palermo OK for women travelling alone?

We have no Palermo-specific data. Two central hostels have women-only dorms, the 1522 helpline answers around the clock for violence and stalking, and 112 has covered the city since 2019, including through the Where Are U app.

How much does a day in Palermo cost?

Around €55, roughly £46, with a dorm bed, two cheap meals and a €3.50 day bus pass. Numbeo users put a meal at an inexpensive restaurant at €15 and a cappuccino at €2.05.

How do you meet people in Palermo?

Through hostel programmes, which run every night, and group tours. The English-language street food tour leaves twice a day for €30, and a pay-what-you-want walking tour starts outside the cathedral.

Is Palermo good for LGBTQ+ travellers?

It has a Pride in June and a queer film festival in late May, and in 2026 Pride week used venues across the city. Nationally, Italy is 36th of 49 on ILGA-Europe's Rainbow Map 2026, scoring 24%, against 43.9% for the UK.

How do I get in from the airport?

The Prestia e Comandè bus reaches Stazione Centrale in about 50 minutes. Taxis charge fixed fares of €39 to €50 depending on the area, or €10 each in a shared taxi if there are at least four of you.

How long should I stay?

Three full days for the centre, the Royal Palace, the cathedral and the Teatro Massimo, plus half a day for Monreale. The Palermo Culture Pass costs €25.60 for 7 days, so it pays off on a week-long stay.
