Spain

Europe's top country for LGBTQ+ rights, cities that live at night, pickpockets to plan for

The short verdict

Yes, especially if you are an LGBTQ+ traveller or someone who likes going out at night. Spain tops the 2026 Rainbow Map, Madrid runs night buses until morning and Barcelona keeps the metro open all Saturday night. The risk to plan for is pickpocketing, not violence: Spain is 27th of 163 in the 2026 Global Peace Index.

version v1 · How we calculate it

Spain is the European country where travelling alone after dark takes least effort. In Madrid the metro runs until 1.30am and then 27 night bus lines leave from Cibeles; in Barcelona the metro does not close on Saturday nights. You can eat at ten like everyone else and still get home on public transport.

For LGBTQ+ travellers it is first on ILGA-Europe's 2026 Rainbow Map, with 89%. Marriage equality dates from 2005 and Law 4/2023 banned conversion therapy. Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia all have Prides and associations with services open to visitors.

The real problem is theft. The Foreign Office puts it first: thieves in teams, distraction tricks, fake officers asking for your wallet. This is not a violent country, it is a country where phones vanish on the metro. Eating out costs less than the EU average, though Barcelona's 5 euro nightly surcharge is the exception that bites.

Who it's for / who it's not for

  • People who go out in the evening and want to get home on public transport
  • LGBTQ+ travellers looking for the strongest legal protections in Europe
  • Anyone who wants to learn or practise Spanish at language exchanges
  • Travellers who want a capital and a beach city in one week
  • People who eat at seven and are in bed by ten
  • Anyone unwilling to think about their wallet on the metro and in crowded squares
  • Heat-sensitive travellers in high summer, when the Foreign Office warns of extreme heat

Culture and customs

Madrid's tourist board says locals rarely have lunch after 3.30pm or dinner after 11pm, and that tapas suit any hour. Tipping is entirely optional. Some places charge 2 or 3 euros for bread or a tapa, but must tell you and you can refuse. A sign saying VAT not included means 10% on top. Many shops close from 2pm to 4 or 5pm, except in tourist areas.

Frequently asked questions

Is Spain safe for solo travellers?

It ranks 27th of 163 in the 2026 Global Peace Index. The practical risks the UK Foreign Office lists are thieves working in teams with distractions, fake police asking for your wallet, and drink spiking. Real officers ask for ID, never your wallet.

Is Spain cheap compared with the rest of Europe?

Cheaper than average. Eurostat put Spain's 2024 price level for restaurants and hotels at 83.9 against an EU average of 100. Barcelona adds a 5 euro nightly city surcharge.

What is the situation for LGBTQ+ travellers?

Spain is first of 49 countries on ILGA-Europe's 2026 Rainbow Map, with 89%. Marriage equality has been law since 2005, and Law 4/2023 bans conversion therapy and lets Spanish nationals change their registered sex from 16 without medical reports. The Foreign Office calls Spain a generally tolerant and progressive place for LGBT+ travellers.

Which city should I pick for a first solo trip?

Madrid for museums, language exchanges and easy late journeys home. Valencia for the beach and lower prices with no tourist tax. Barcelona for very social hostels, if you accept higher costs and a closer eye on your wallet.

Where can I get help if something happens?

Call 112 in an emergency, and 016, a free 24-hour national line that answers in 53 languages, for violence against women. The ALERT COPS app lets you contact the police discreetly, and British Consulates can be reached on +34 917 146 300.

What do I need to enter Spain from the UK?

Spain is in Schengen, so British passport holders get 90 days in any 180, the passport must be under 10 years old and valid for 3 months after you leave, and the EU Entry/Exit System now records fingerprints and a photo. Check GOV.UK before travelling.
