Barcelona

All-night metro on Saturdays, hostel dinners and a tourist tax that keeps rising

The short verdict

It depends how much you will spend and how closely you will watch your wallet. On Saturdays the metro runs all night, hostels lay on dinners and paella for guests and the LGBTQ+ scene is one of Europe's largest. But the city surcharge is now 5 euros a night, the big sights are expensive and pickpocketing is the number one risk.

version v1 · How we calculate it

Barcelona works alone, but it charges you in attention and in cash. Attention goes on your wallet. The Foreign Office repeats that in Spain thieves work in teams with distractions, and the places you will spend most time, the metro and crowded markets, are where a lapse costs most. Cash goes on everything else. Since 1 April 2026 the city surcharge on the tourist tax is 5 euros a night, rising a euro a year to 8 by 2029. The Sagrada Família costs 26 euros, Park Güell 18.

That said, it is one of the easiest cities in which to meet people. The big hostels know the drill: Paella Night at Yeah, karaoke and DJs in Generator's bar, brunch and a free tour at TOC. And on Saturdays the metro simply does not close, which is rare in Europe and handy if you are used to the last Tube.

The practical tip is to sleep in Gràcia or Eixample rather than on the Rambla. That is where you find Generator's women-only dorm and TOC's women-only rooms, and Hostelworld lists Onefam Batllo in Eixample from 14 euros a night.

Who it's for / who it's not for

  • Anyone who wants a hostel with group dinners and activities every night
  • People who go out and want the metro home on a Saturday night
  • LGBTQ+ travellers looking for a large, organised scene
  • Fans of covered markets and eating at the counter
  • Tight budgets that cannot absorb a 5 euro nightly surcharge
  • Anyone who does not want to think about their wallet on the metro and the Rambla
  • People looking for a quiet city in August or during La Mercè
  • Anyone hoping to walk into the Sagrada Família without booking online

People go out late and often meet in a neighbourhood bar. A market such as Sant Antoni or a bar in Gràcia makes a good public first meeting place.

The Foreign Office warns about drink spiking with GHB and liquid ecstasy. Order your own drinks and get home by metro or a taxi you booked yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Is Barcelona safe for a woman travelling alone?

Theft is the realistic risk. For Spain, the UK Foreign Office says thieves often work in teams using distraction, and warns about fake police asking for wallets and drink spiking with GHB. Getting home is easy at weekends, with the metro running until 2am on Fridays and all night on Saturdays, and the NitBus covering other nights from 10pm to 5am.

How much does a day in Barcelona cost on your own?

A 14 to 16 euro dorm bed, the 5 euro city surcharge, two cheap meals at about 16 euros each according to Numbeo users and a few rides on the 13 euro T-casual come to around 60 euros. A hostel private room and one museum take it to about 130.

How do I meet people in Barcelona?

Yeah Hostel in Eixample runs a Paella Night and group dinners around 9pm. Generator in Gràcia has karaoke, DJs and live music in its bar. Runnerbean's free tour leaves Plaça Reial at 11am all year, plus 4.30pm from April to October.

Is Barcelona good for LGBTQ+ travellers?

Yes. Spain tops ILGA-Europe's 2026 Rainbow Map with 89%, and the gay bars of the Eixample, known as the Gaixample, sit within a few blocks of each other. The city council runs the Centre LGTBI at Comte Borrell 22.

Where should I stay in Barcelona as a solo woman?

Generator on Carrer de Còrsega, between Gràcia and Eixample, has a six-bed women-only dorm from 16 euros a night. TOC on Gran Via has women-only rooms and a rooftop pool open from 1 May to 1 November.

How do I get from El Prat to the city late at night?

The Aerobús runs 24 hours to Terminals 1 and 2, from 7.75 euros. At night the N17 and N18 buses also run from Plaça Catalunya. The L9 Sud metro needs a 5.90 euro airport ticket; the T-casual is not valid there.

When should I go?

It depends what you want. La Mercè fills late September, 23 to 27 September in 2026, and the Festa Major de Gràcia takes over mid-August. For smaller crowds, avoid those weeks and the Circuit Festival in early August.
